Surya Namaskar ( Sun Salutation ) is considered the ” King ” of asana pratice. It is a beautiful weave of the physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual aspects of our being. It composed of 12 vital postures through which we show our gratitude toward Lord Surya ( Sun ), as well as work on the spine and the major muscles of the body to give strength and flexibility.

Before Start Practicing, Keep following these things in your mind :

Practice Surya Namaskar on an empty stomach, early in the morning, with rising of the Sun. Ensure finishing bowel movement before practicing Surya Namaskar.

Start slowly. Firstly focus on getting your postures correct. Listen to your body always. Do not distress your body or try to over do any thing.

Gradually increase the numbers of repetitions. Maximum repetition you can do is 12 in a day.

Name of different postures ( asanas ) in Surya Namaskar and the mantras you can chant ( if you wish ) in series :

  1. Dakshasana Om Mitraya Namah
  2. Pranamasana ( Prayer pose / Namaskarasana ) – Om Ravaye Namah
  3. Hasta Uttanasana ( Raised Arms Pose ) – Om Suryaya Namah
  4. Ashwa Sanchalanasana ( Equestrian Pose ) – Om Bhanave Namah
  5. Parvatasana ( Mountain Pose ) – Om Khagaye Namah
  6. Ashtanga Namaskara ( Salute with Eight Body Parts ) – Om Pushna Namah
  7. Bhujangasana ( Cobra Pose ) – Om Hiranyagarbhaya Namah
  8. Parvatasana ( Mountain Pose ) – Om Marichye Namah
  9. Ashwa Sanchalanasana ( Equestrian Pose ) – Om Adityay Namah
  10. Pada Hastasana ( Hand to Foot Pose ) – Om Savitre Namah
